Chris comes full circle and now helps others in their journey to wellness

EDMONTON — In 2020, Chris Jamieson stood in front of the Edmonton Opioid Dependency clinic doors sharing his story of recovery in hopes of inspiring others.

Four years later he’s a peer support worker — and now recovery coach — who provides support to others who are in a place he once was.

In 2016, he suffered a near-fatal overdose. Following his release from hospital, he went straight to the Opioid Dependency clinic to begin treatment.

Former Opioid Dependency Program client, Chris Jamieson, has not only put in the many years of hard work of going through the Program, but he has become a peer support worker and Recovery Coach, helping those struggling with addiction, just as he had.

“I worked with an addiction counsellor there for about three years before I was finally ready to, you know, stop everything and just live a clean, healthy life.

He attributes his history of past use to helping him to connect with clients.

“Their demeanor changes when I tell them that I’m also a recovering addict, and I was once a client here.”

Jamieson explains that a recovery coach is someone who is well-versed in supporting multiple paths to recovery.

“Whatever works for you is what is important. If you, or anyone you know, is struggling with any kind of addiction, reach out for help.

“I have fulfilling, enriching relationships with people now. I get the privilege of being a father to my son."

“If I can do it, anyone can do it.”
