ALBERTA – Recovery Alberta is adding 60 community-based mental health and addiction recovery beds to help ensure patients receive the right care at the right time while reducing pressure on hospitals and emergency departments.
Recovery Alberta will oversee implementation of these community-based recovery beds, delivered through partnerships with community providers across Alberta. Locations and timelines will be finalized in the coming months.
When patients cannot access timely mental health and addiction care, their conditions can worsen and lead to crisis, often resulting in hospital visits or admissions. These beds will support patients who no longer require acute hospital care but still need structured rehabilitation and recovery supports.
Thirty community-based beds will be funded this year, with an additional 30 beds to be added next year.
“Mental health and addiction care is a vital part of Alberta’s health system. By expanding community-based recovery beds, we are helping more people receive the right care at the right time while reducing pressure on hospitals and emergency departments. This investment supports recovery while strengthening capacity across the health system.”
- Rick Wilson, Minister of Mental Health and Addiction
Community-based recovery beds provide a structured environment where individuals can continue treatment while receiving clinical care, counselling and recovery supports. These services help patients stabilize and build the skills needed to continue their recovery journey.
“Recovery Alberta is focused on expanding access to evidence-based mental health and addiction services across the province. Community recovery beds play an important role in the continuum of care, supporting individuals as they transition from hospital settings while continuing their recovery in a safe and supportive environment.”
- Kerry Bales, CEO, Recovery Alberta
By expanding recovery-focused care in the community, more Albertans will be able to access treatment earlier and avoid unnecessary hospital stays, helping ensure acute care beds remain available for those who need them most. With the right care and support, recovery is possible.
